Hokkaido Day 3!
We left Sapporo and started heading south, stopping for the day in Noboribetsu, a famous onsen town. If you didn't know, natural onsen smell like sulfur (rotten eggs), and here they have a place called "Hell Valley" where you can see all the discolored rock and steam rising out of the ground! It's said that oni (ogres and demons) live here, and that the small stream at the bottom of the valley is the border of hell, and that if you cross it you can't come back. Interesting. The flocks of ravens (crows?) swarming overhead really added to the atmosphere.
It was again freezing as all heck and quite snowy! One thing I've noticed is that a lot of the streets and sidewalks here don't use salt or sand to prevent ice from forming, so you're essentially walking on snow that quickly becomes packed ice. I've got some big rubbery winter boots that give me magic traction but Jun and Chris were having a heck of a time with it!
Once again I took some very lackluster photos because
A) I didn't want to take my fingers out of my gloves
B) We were filming most of it anyway
Video coming eventually!
PS: All the good photos I've been uploading (the ones with the two of us) were taken by Okanotv!
